So you need a crown. Maybe a tooth is chipped. Maybe an old filling has given up. Or maybe you’ve been told you need one to protect a tooth after a root canal. Whatever the reason, you now have a choice to make: traditional crown or same-day crown?
Both options could restore your tooth and protect your smile. But they go about it in very different ways. At Metropolitan Center for Complete Dentistry in East Hanover, we offer both, and we want you to understand what each one means for your time, your comfort, and your results.

The Traditional Crown Process
For decades, getting a crown was a two-visit process. During the first visit, your dentist numbs the tooth, shapes it down to make room for the crown, and takes a physical impression, usually with that goopy, gag-inducing material that tastes like minty rubber. That impression gets sent to a dental lab, where technicians fabricate your permanent crown.
In the meantime, you leave with a temporary crown made of acrylic or resin. You’re told to be careful with it, no sticky or chewy foods, and you come back in about two weeks. At that second appointment, your temporary crown comes off. Your permanent crown goes on. Your dentist checks the fit, makes any necessary adjustments, and cements it in place.
The traditional approach has worked well for a very long time. The crowns are strong, durable, and custom-made by skilled technicians. But it requires two appointments, a temporary crown that can come loose, and a waiting period of one to two weeks.
The Same-Day Crown Process
Same-day crowns use digital technology to compress the entire process into a single visit. Instead of goopy impressions, we use a digital scanner, a small, handheld device that captures highly accurate 3D images of your tooth and surrounding structures. No gagging. No messy material. Just a wand that glides over your teeth and creates a digital model on a screen in real time.
That digital model goes into specialized software that designs your crown right there in the office. Then a milling machine, essentially a 3D printer for ceramics, carves your custom crown out of a single block of dental ceramic. About an hour later, your crown is ready.
We check the fit and color. We make any small adjustments. And then we cement it in place. You could walk out with your permanent crown the same day. No temporary. No second appointment. And no waiting.
Which One Is Right for You?
There’s no universal answer, because every patient and every tooth is different. Here’s how we think about it:
Same-day crowns are a great fit when:
- You have a busy schedule and want to minimize time in the chair
- You’re someone who prefers fewer appointments
- The tooth being treated is in a visible area and you want the final result immediately
- You simply prefer the convenience of digital impressions over traditional ones
Traditional crowns may still be the better choice when:
- The case is especially complex and requires lab-fabricated materials that aren’t available in our in-office milling machine
- You have specific aesthetic requirements that benefit from a dental ceramist’s artistry
- Multiple teeth are being restored at once
- Your insurance covers traditional crowns differently than same-day options
What We Want You to Know
At Metropolitan Center for Complete Dentistry, we follow one guiding question with every recommendation: Would I Do It On Me?
That means we don’t push one option over the other just because we have the technology. We weigh the pros and cons for your specific situation. We explain the differences honestly. And we let you make the choice that feels right for you.
Both approaches give you a strong, natural-looking crown that protects your tooth for years to come. The difference is really about the journey and what matters most to you.
